Getting and Keeping Your Student Job

Here are some important tips on getting and keeping your student job ... or any position. This article also provides suggestions for making the most of your career development through your student work experiences. The Student Employment Office provides this information in the hopes that it will enhance your career development while here at CSU.

Acing the Interview:
Supervisors usually address the following topics during an interview:

  • responsibilities of the job,
  • skills required to perform the job,
  • start date and hours needed,
  • pay rate for the job.

Bring your resume with you to the interview and be prepared to discuss how you can meet the department's need.

Completing The Hiring Process:
Before a job is offered a student who has not worked on campus, the student will be asked to complete the Homeland Security Form (DMA form).

You will also be asked to complete a number of other employment and tax forms. These forms are available on the student employment website. All, except the I-9 form, may be completed ahead of time.

In order to complete the I-9 form you will need original documents that prove your identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. You can view the I-9 form for a complete list but most students use their driver license and their social security card which must be signed and not laminated.

You may begin working after all paperwork has been accurately and completely filled in and forwarded to the Student Employment Office.
