"The challenges we face in urban education are difficult and complex"

by Justin Perry

Dr. Justin Perry has been named director of the newly formed Center for Urban Education. The center serves as the research, evaluation and development arm of the CSU Campus International School. The center opens November 29, 2010 and will be located in Julka Hall, Room 394A. Perry joined the CSU faculty in 2006 as an assistant professor with the Department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision, and Adult Learning. His background is in counseling psychology and he specializes in the applications of the school to work transition and school dropout prevention among urban youth. In his new position, Perry will coordinate urban education research conducted by faculty from the College of Education and Human Services as well as other Colleges at CSU. Perry is a prolific researcher who has written 29 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on urban education. Perry also has found success in garnering grants for College of Education and Human Services’ programs, including a federal Institute of Educational Sciences grant of $1 million to establish a school-to-work transition program with the Euclid City Schools.

Away from CSU, Perry works as a psychologist with the Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development in Shaker Heights. There, he provides individual child psychotherapy, testing and parent guidance. Perry also serves as a vice president of Esperanza, a Cleveland-based non-profit organization that serves the educational needs of Hispanic students.
