Justin Perry, Ph.D
Justin Perry

Dr. Justin Perry is Director of the Center for Urban Education. He joined Cleveland State University in 2006 in the Department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision, and Adult Learning. He received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. A Faculty Profile of Dr. Perry can be found here.

Dr. Perry is a scientific and social advocate of urban education. His work has been dedicated to serving the academic and non-academic needs of youth in urban schools. With his training and professional background in counseling psychology, Dr. Perry has worked with stakeholders across a wide range of constituencies and disciplines. As the Project Director, he is currently undertaking a $1 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education and Institute of Education Sciences. This grant brings together students and faculty from the Masters in Urban Secondary Teaching Program (MUST), English and Language Arts teachers at four urban high schools in Northeast Ohio, and program staff at Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.). The goal of the project is to develop, refine, and evaluate a college and career readiness program that can be replicated in other schools.

Dr. Perry has published over 30 journal articles and book chapters on topics pertaining to the school-to-work (career) transition, vocational psychology, program evaluation, multicultural issues in psychology and education, scale development, and other related areas involving the intersections between positive youth development, mental health, and urban education. He actively includes students and faculty from a variety of departments in his scholarly work and research.

Away from CSU, Dr. Perry serves as 2nd Vice President of Esperanza, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the educational needs of Hispanic students. He is also a psychologist at the Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development. Dr. Perry’s commitment to urban education is built on core values that embraces interdisciplinary collaboration, social justice, community service, and student success.


Vicki Sussman, M.A., J.D.
Vicki Sussman

Vicki Sussman is the Grant Writer and Administrator of the Center. Prior to coming to Cleveland State University, Ms. Sussman was Director of Grants and Business Development at the Cleveland Cord Blood Center and a Business Manager at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine. She also served as an Administrator and Data and Assessment Coordinator for the Washington State Department of Health, as well as the Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Center of Pierce County in Washington. Ms. Sussman brings many years of experience in grant writing and management for both pre-award and post-award grant contracts. She has written numerous foundation, federal, state, and municipal grants with proven success. Ms. Sussman received her J.D. and M.A. in Sociology at The Ohio State University.
